dog shelter charlotte nc

No animals will be placed on hold if you call/email/text/chat/message on social channels. Select animals are eligible for pre-adoption after passing a health and behavior assessment when they arrive at the shelter. In order to fast track these animals into a home as quickly as possible, you can pre-adopt them while they wait their stray hold time. If they are not reclaimed by an owner adopters will be contacted when they are ready to go home. Our team of dedicated animal lovers is committed to ensuring that every pet is treated with kindness, compassion, and respect throughout the rehoming process. Without your generous and on-going support, we cannot be successful.

Animal Care and Control

Our mission is to champion the wellbeing of companion animals and strengthen their bond with the people who know, love, and need them. CCR Fence makes a donation to Greater Charlotte SPCA for every fence sold. To help your canine friend settle in, set up a “doggie den” – a safe, cozy crate or small room where they can quietly decompress. Provide them with a bed, appropriate toys, and a water bowl. Also be sure to avoid excessive excitement (e.g. dog parks, outdoor dining, walks downtown) for the first few weeks. To adopt a dog, you must be 18 or older and have a valid form of identification.

‘I will miss you’: Dog surrendered to animal shelter with heartbreaking note

If everything goes well, no barking, snapping, pulling, or other tense behavior; proceed with allowing the dogs to meet. We can facilitate a more correct greeting by encouraging them to walk circles with each other or even just slowly decreasing the distance while walking parallel. It can be VERY helpful to have another person present to simply observe the body language between the dogs, especially if either handler is unsure what to look for. Keep in mind that the animal shelter is an unnatural environment.

First, it is important to take into consideration the personality of the dog already in the home. How do they typically greet other dogs on walks or at the park? These bits of information can help tell you if and how we should introduce a new dog into the house. From doe-eyed couch potatoes to floppy-eared hiking buds, the Humane Society of Charlotte has all sorts of doggies waiting for their new homes. Our website is continuously updated with the latest information on our adoptable animals. To meet the dogs eligible for this program, you must come to the shelter to see/visit/adopt.

That’s why our experienced behavioral team offers low-cost training support. Adoption fees at the Humane Society of Charlotte are based on factors like breed, size, age, and temperament. The Greater Charlotte Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) serves the animals and people of Charlotte, NC and the surrounding counties. We are an autonomous organization not affiliated with or supported by any other SPCAs, including the ASPCA. The Greater Charlotte SPCA is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit. All donations are deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Along the way, we prepare them to become wonderful companions by taking the time to socialize them and patiently teaching them to trust.

While looking over the adoptable cats on our site you might find some that are listed as Pet Super or PetSmart. Click on their picture and there will a note saying which store they are located. You are welcome to contact them to make sure the cat is still available for adoption; you are then encouraged to go to the store in person to meet them.

This way if either dog shows signs of territory aggression or resource guarding, it is much safer to separate them. If they greet well on leash in the house, drop the leashes and allow them to play. Human interference at this point is only necessary in a few circumstances. If the dogs become overexcited in their play, we can help by asking them to settle or separating and walking them apart a moment until they relax.
